Habermas 1054 in Black Harness Leather

Black harness leather, black suede inside. The Habermas 1054 is built from Hermann Oak leather, which comes thicker than the rest.

A finished black English bridle leather briefcase with original Marcellino latches (a related bag, not the 1054), from the Marcellino NY Briefcase Maker channel on YouTube.

Thick on purpose

The listing says it directly: Hermann Oak leather comes thicker than the rest, so once the suede goes in, the result is a thick and heavy briefcase that will last a lifetime. The leather is drum dyed black. The page on leather choice gives the background on the tannery, and the journal article on bridle versus harness leather sets this leather beside the English bridle leather I use on other cases.

Black on black

Black leather with a black suede lining leaves no contrast to hide behind. The shape, the stitching and the brass all show against it. The suede lining page covers the material inside.

Brass against black

The brass latches stand out most on a black bag. The Marcellino latch page explains how I build them, and the journal piece on solid brass hardware explains why I use it.

Habermas, again

The Habermas was first designed for New York lawyers and refined over many years. The anatomy of a briefcase glossary names its parts, and the leather care page covers upkeep.
