The dedication to these traditional methods involves extensive hours of manual labor, employing only hand tools without the assistance of modern conveniences such as sewing machines. The classic brass English key lock and the Italian combination lock have become very hard to source. If you are ordering this briefcase with either one, reach out first to check — most likely it is no longer available.

It is a beautiful lock. It is just hard to get now.

My suggested alternatives are the Marcellino Latch or the quick-release latch found on my Woodhull briefcases. We can also use a single center buckle — or, on a double-strap case like the Wallace, skip the center lock entirely and let the buckles do the closing.
