m28: Natural Leather, Burgundy Sheepskin

A crossbody case with two rings on the back, no dye on the leather, and a lining the color of red wine.

The leather

Natural vegetable tanned leather with a burgundy sheepskin suede lining and a brass key lock. It has double compartments and a shoulder strap. A small triangle of stitched leather sits above the lock. I made it in late 2023.

With no dye and no heavy wax, natural leather records everything. Tanner Bates, a UK leather company describes patina as the leather taking on skin oils, sunlight and moisture and darkening in stages. A case from late 2023 may have changed since these photos.

Rings on the back

The rings sit on the back, so the strap, which is lined in red, lets it hang crossbody. The leather design above the lock on the sample will not be made on new custom orders.

Size

10 x 7 x 4 inches, hand saddle stitched, with an adjustable strap, 20 inch drop.

On the workbench

I photographed m28 on a worn wooden workbench in front of a window with blinds, as well as on white.

How it is made

The key lock is one of my high-end handmade locks, made by hand with brass parts, not the zinc pot metal found on most bags.

The suede is real: see the suede lining page for why I use it instead of microsuede, and the care page for how to look after it.

Veg tan is covered in Bridle Leather vs. Vegetable-Tanned: What the Difference Means in Your Hands and on my care page.

The seams are hand stitched; see The Saddle Stitch Explained: Hand-Sewing Leather Step by Step for the method.
