The Story

One Craftsman, One Workshop, No Shortcuts

Peter Kalafatis founded Marcellino NY on a simple premise: a briefcase built by one pair of hands, start to finish, will always outlast one stamped out by a factory line. Every Wallace and Habermas model is shaped, stitched, and finished by Peter himself in a New York workshop — English bridle leather, six-month lead times, and a client list drawn from law, medicine, and the arts. The brand has been featured on CNBC’s Billion Dollar Buyer with Tilman Fertitta, but the recognition changed nothing about how the work gets done.

The instinct for durable craft over disposable trend didn’t start with leather. Peter grew up in Brooklyn, the son of Greek immigrant parents — his mother a waitress, his father a cook — and came up on streets that taught him early that survival and discipline were the same skill. He earned his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Long Island University and completed graduate work in Media Studies and Sociology at The New School University, building a habit of examining a thing down to its structure before deciding it was finished. That habit shows up in a hand-cut edge as much as it does in a sentence.

In 2007, Peter published his first book — A Rebel Life: Of Love, Redemption & Success, a creative true story memoir written largely at his son’s hospital bedside, tracing the arc from 1980s Brooklyn street life to a hard-won sense of purpose. In 2000, he and his father Gus opened The Heritage Diner in Mount Sinai, NY, where Peter still develops the menu as chef, twenty-five years on. In 2026, Peter and his wife Paola Meyer — a bilingual licensed real estate broker — launched Maison Pawli Realty, bringing the same standard to Long Island’s North Shore real estate market.
